During World War II, the Marin Headlands and surrounding areas were a critical part of the defense network protecting the entrance to San Francisco Bay. The Marin Headlands were heavily fortified during WWII with soldiers, radar stations, anti-aircraft guns, and coastal defense batteries protecting the Bay Area. Marinship in Sausalito built 93 cargo ships during World War II, employing tens of thousands of workers supporting the Allied war effort.
