Owner's Story
My parents ran a small corner store in Queens for twenty-one years.
It was not a famous place. No sign worth remembering, no perfect shelves, just coffee, lottery tickets, milk, aspirin, plantains, batteries, and neighbors who came in even when they did not need anything.
My father kept a little notebook behind the counter for people who were short a few dollars. He pretended it was business, but most of those pages were never paid back and he knew it.
New York gave our family hard mornings and long nights, but it also gave us a neighborhood that became family.
