Jackson County, Michigan Hex – Birthplace of the Republican Party
Right here in Jackson County, Michigan, under the shade of ancient oaks on July 6, 1854, a determined crowd of abolitionists and freedom fighters came together. That gathering, known as the “Under the Oaks” convention, gave birth to the Republican Party. They chose the name Republican, stood against the spread of slavery, and helped pave the way for leaders like Abraham Lincoln. Jackson County has proudly carried that legacy ever since.
I’m Sean Connor, and I’ve claimed this featured hex to honor that history and pass our family’s story forward as part of America’s 250th celebration. Living in Jackson and raising my son Roman, I work hard every day to build a better future for him and to live the values of self-discipline, resilience, and individual liberty that were forged under those oaks. I’m also a descendant by marriage to Mary Todd Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s wife, which makes this connection to Republican history feel even more personal.
As a member of the NRCC finance team, I pour my energy into supporting Republican efforts across Michigan. I build coalitions, reach out to donors, and fight for policies that strengthen families and defend freedom. From grassroots organizing to standing firm against government overreach, I’m driven by the belief that parents should lead, hard work should be rewarded, and liberty must always come first.
This featured hex belongs to my family and to every Michigander keeping the Republican flame alive. May it remind future generations that the spirit of liberty, first kindled right here in Jackson County, still burns bright, and that each of us has a role in writing the next inspiring chapter of America’s story.
