Owner's Story
My mother cooked in a school cafeteria in Providence for almost twenty years.
She called the kids “my babies,” even the tall ones who pretended they were too old for kindness. She slipped extra rolls onto trays when she thought someone needed it and kept a list in her head of who could not eat certain things.
Her hands were always dry from washing them. Her shoes were always ugly because comfortable mattered more.
She never made much money, but former students still remember her. That is a kind of monument too.
